Rachel Carson skating KoaMOn April 17th, 2016, “Kids on a Mission” Skating for a Cause was held by five energetic and motivated leaders from Rachel Carson Middle school. In their own words “We are Alina, Sofia, Swara, Kate, and Sarah. We are middle schoolers currently attending Rachel Carson Middle School. We are part of the first ever middle school Touching Heart club. We recently hosted a Touching Heart event at Reston Skatequest to raise money for children in the Hope for Children’s Center orphanage in Kenya. They were in desperate need of school supplies so that the kids could receive a proper education. We will send our money to Kenya so that they can get proper school supplies.
There were many companies that helped us by donating money and prizes for our raffle. We want to recognize Barnes and Noble, which donated a gift card; Galaria Plastic Surgery and Dermatology which donated money and creams; the Washington Capitals which donated an official game puck, signed by Karl Alzner; and Skatequest which was so generous as to let us host our event at their skate rink, and which donated four free skating passes for our raffle.
Our event was a big success. We raised over $400, and a total of 47 people skated with Touching Heart. Everyone enjoyed our event, and our raffle was also a big success. We raffled off candy, gift cards, creams, free skating passes, a bracelet, and more. It feels great helping people. People were very excited about Skating for a Cause! See event photos
