Four 10-year-old boys put their skills together to organize the event from start to finish. They came up with their own budget, made event flyers and posters and asked their friends to come out in support.

“Lunches With Love” project led by high school student

Kids on a Mission leader and high school student Jack Lee challenged himself and his team of volunteers to make 100 lunches for the residents of Embry Rucker Shelter. It was no easy task but we believed he could do it. Under the direction of a Touching Heart coach and teen mentor, Jack created a budget, recruited volunteers and planned the many details of the event.

1 Lani Feeds Homeless

Teen leader helps feed the homeless

We are so proud of high school student and participant of our Kids on a Mission program, Lani Wolf, for leading a successful event for the Embry Rucker Shelter. From beginning to end, Lani spearheaded the project with direction from a Touching Heart coach. Lani drew up a work plan, came up with her own budget, implemented cost-saving measures, organized a team of volunteers and planned all of the logistics.

Chicken farm for Zambia

A simple, chicken farm goes a long way for a village in Zambia. Touching Heart funded the project that has many uses. The meat and eggs from the chickens are sold in the local farming markets, benefiting the entire community. The kids living at the village are in charge of taking care of the chickens, teaching them responsibility and how to work as a team.

The kids are looking sharp in their new uniforms funded by Touching Heart. We also bought the students new socks and shoes, which they are very proud to wear. We also provided funds for school supplies, to help build new classrooms and pay for the salaries of a new principal and teacher.

Solar power panels for orphanage in Kenya

Touching Heart supports the aim for sustainable energy at an orphanage in Kenya. We bought solar panels for the roof to help provide electricity. The orphanage had previously experienced multiple blackouts due to a loss of electricity. Now, the solar panels allow for consistent electricity, also providing light for the kids to do homework and study at night.

Touching Heart was faced with the stark reality of orphans not having clothes or shoes to wear. So we wanted to make an impact for an orphanage in Mozambique. We bought them undergarments, socks and shoes. For some of the kids, it was their first pair of shoes, a hard thing for many of us to fathom.

Touching Heart’s funding of a pair of oxen and farm equipment used for plowing the land is expected to double food production at an orphanage in Mozambique. The oxen and plow have proven to be just the right recipe for cultivating the land for cassava planting.

Touching Heart believes in the power of education and how our children’s future success depends on it. That is why we sent funds to an orphanage in Kenya to build a high school. The orphanage has had a great need for more classroom space and a dining hall as many of the children have to stand during meals and at times eat their meals outdoors.

Touching Heart helped fund a biogas project at an orphanage in Kenya by buying cows so that their waste will be converted into energy and channels of water. Classroom project for orphanage in Zambia

The kids and community are ecstatic about their classroom that Touching Heart funded. This is the third classroom at the orphanage. Now, kids up to third grade can stay and learn at the school whereas before, the school only had room for up to second grade. The expansion eliminates the difficult transition from school to school.

Touching Heart volunteers are gearing up for an afternoon of crafts and a visit from Santa! We are in our 4th year of teaming up with Fairfax County Family Services in throwing a Christmas celebration on December 21st for the kids in foster care. This event attracts many volunteers and donations from the local community and the kids are truly grateful.

Fun fair for kids in foster care

It was a day full of smiles and laughter as Touching Heart hosted a fun fair for children in Fairfax County’s Foster Care program. The August heat didn’t keep the kids from enjoying potato sack races, an array of fun crafts and face paintings. It was also a time for siblings who were separated through the foster care system to reunite for a few hours.
